To install a green energy device, such as a new Solar Panel installation, your local distribution network operator (DNO) needs to be notified via a DNO application.
This is required for both homes and businesses as your newly installed green energy device will be connected to the national grid, and the local DNO will need to accurately monitor the extra demand on the system. This is critical to reducing the risk of local blackouts, which can result from too many unknown energy devices turning on or off at the same time. A green energy device includes Solar Panels, Battery Storage, Heat Pumps and EV Charge Points.
When it comes to installing Solar Panels, there are a few different DNO applications and certain times to apply, depending on the type and size of your Solar Panel system. The good news is that this is not something you’d need to worry about as our MCS certified solar installers will look after the application for you.
However, if you did want to learn more about the different types of DNO applications for Solar Panel Installations, we asked our expert team to explain the difference below…
G98 and G99, what’s the difference?
You may have heard the terms G98, G99 or even G100 for your DNO application. This simply means the specific application to use dependent on the size of the solar installation, and when to apply.
A system generating 16A per phase or less will usually require a G98 application, which is deemed ‘connect and notify’. This means that our installers can submit the G98 application form to the DNO within 28 days of installation. Most home solar installations tend to fall into this category.
A system generating more than 16A per phase will require a G99 application, which is deemed ‘apply to connect’. This means that our installers will need to submit the G99 application form (or G100 if export is limited) to the DNO before installation to ensure safe and effective operation of the electricity network. The response from the DNO before installation work can commence is usually between 45 to 65 days.
A successful DNO application is also needed to be able to take part in schemes such as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Scheme. You can learn more about the SEG scheme in our update here.
Who is my DNO?
If you’re unsure who the DNO is in your area, you can find them on the ENA website here by simply filling in your postcode.
