What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?
The SEG is a government initiative that was introduced on 1 January 2020. Under the SEG, you may be able to earn money with the renewable electricity generated in your home by being paid for every unit that you feed back to the grid.
According to Solar Energy UK, the average SEG tariff is 4.5p/kWh, which means you could earn up to £220 per year for exporting your excess electricity to the grid. This is in addition to the savings you make on your energy bills by using solar power.
To be eligible for the SEG, you need to have an MCS Certified Solar install and installer, and a smart meter that can measure your export. You also need to choose an energy supplier that offers the SEG scheme.
