Certain fluorescent and halogen lamps will soon be history.
From September 2023, a selection of T5 & T8 fluorescent tubes and halogen capsule lamps will be banned from being sold on the UK market, and being installed in homes and businesses in England, Wales and Scotland.
Why is the UK banning certain lamps?
The UK Government and Restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) updated its legislation(1) in July 2023 to ensure that any electrical and electronic equipment that contains certain hazardous substances, such as mercury, has limited levels or is banned entirely. Mercury is a harmful substance that can damage your health and the environment.
The goal is to eventually replace these lamps with LED alternatives, whether that’s a retrofit LED lamp or an LED luminaire alternative, which are more energy efficient and eco-friendly. LED lighting can also save you money on your electricity bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
